Did you know there may be a link between Osteoporosis and irritable bowel?* Yeah, I was as surprised as you. I thought irritable bowel was just about being extra gassy and spending more time in the bathroom than anyone else. But no, turns out it can also lead to weak and fragile bones.

Now, I don’t know about you, but I’ve seen my grandma and her sisters suffer from Osteoporosis and I don’t want to end up like them. So, I’ve made it my life’s mission to figure out how to avoid it and then tell all my friends (that’s you, by the way).

We all know it’s best to eat right and exercise. But there are other factors to consider. Smoking and alcohol can be very hard on a gut, interfering with the body’s ability to absorb calcium and other key nutrients for bone health. And foods often considered “good,” like dairy and vegetables, can certainly add calcium to your diet, but they can also kick off a symphony of stomach gurgles and increased bloating. The best way to know what your trigger foods are is to maintain a food journal.

If you’re just beginning this journey, here’s a great starter list of gentle-on-the-gut leafy greens:

  • Arugula
  • Kale
  • Romaine
  • Spinich

If milk is a problem, try a lactose-free alternative like oat milk or even coconut milk (just be aware that it’s high in saturated fat – sigh).

Calcium supplements may also help, but always be sure to speak with your medical professional beforehand trying anything new.

If you’re like me and hate to exercise, trying blasting your favorite tunes and dancing around your house like nobody’s watching.

Finally, and this may sound like a no-brainer, but try not to fall! Be a detective and lookout for tripping hazards like clutter and loose rugs (my nemesis). This is especially important for those late night bathroom visits when you’re not fully awake.

So, there you have it. A few simple tips to help prevent Osteoporosis and keep your bones strong and healthy.

Now, if you’ll excuse me, I have a dance party to attend.

With love and care,

AnnaKay
