If stress* is knocking on our door 24/7, our digestive systems might act like a grumpy neighbor who screams for everyone to get off the lawn. Cue the bloating, gas, diarrhea, or abdominal pain.

And what about high stress moments, like a job interview or a first date, and your stomach makes all sorts of weird noises? In case you need an interpreter, stomach gurgles are not saying “hire me” or “I’m a catch.”

But you know what’s worse? When we try to alleviate the stress by eating a favorite comfort food, only to have IBS rebel once again. Gut: “Oh, you thought you could escape by eating that pint of ice cream? Think again, sister.”

And don’t even get me started on those times when I was in a rush, running late for work or a meeting, and IBS decided to make an unexpected appearance. Gut: “Oh, you think you can rush me? I’ll show you who’s boss.”

I’m probably telling you something you already know–one step to helping your digestive system is to manage stress. Here are just a few I like to do:

  • Light a candle
  • Take deep breaths
  • Exercise – yoga can be especially helpful
  • Meditation or Prayer

It’s time to be good to ourselves.

With love and care,

AnnaKay
