Let’s talk about diet and Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS).* When it comes to food, the gut can be a real pain in the you-know-what. Keeping a food diary (link here) and getting tested for food sensitivities along with speaking with your healthcare professional are great starting points.
You may want to consider a low FODMAP diet. Now, I know what you’re thinking – “FODMAP? Is that even a real word?” Well, yes, it is, and it stands for Fermentable Oligosaccharides, Disaccharides, Monosaccharides, and Polyols. Basically, these are types of carbohydrates that can wreak havoc on a digestive system. So, if you’re tired of feeling like a bloated balloon, it might be worth a try.
The AnnaKay quick and dirty synopsis: some carbohydrates will actually ferment in your large intestine thanks to the bacteria there, which can cause gas, bloating and cramps. By removing the foods with high FODMAP, some believe we give our gut a fighting chance to make it through an important meeting or cuddle with a significant other.
Foods with high FODMAP include milk, cheese, wheat, onions, garlic and beans.
Low FODMAP foods include almond milk, rice, oats, carrots, lettuce, spinach, strawberries and grapes.
A Fun Approach to Managing IBS with FODMA
A lot of people see restrictions and nope out, but I like to think of all the time I’ll add to my schedule by not always running to the bathroom! You can even make it fun! Pretend your “only eat this” list is a scavenger hunt or that you’re FODMAP-Loading for an upcoming marathon. Use this time as an excuse to try out all those trendy gluten-free, dairy-free, sugar-free snacks you’ve been eyeing at the health food store. Who knows, you might just find a new favorite snack in the process!
Of course, as with any diet, it’s important to work with a healthcare provider or registered dietitian to ensure that you’re following the low FODMAP diet safely and effectively.
So, let’s raise a glass of water (because let’s face it, we probably need it to get things going) to all the hilarious moments out there just waiting to be discovered. We’re warriors, and nothing can stop us (although a really spicy taco might slow us down for a moment).
With love and care,
AnnaKay
