I’m going to admit that I’d never even heard of the gut-brain access until I started learning more about irritable bowel. No, it’s not just a quaint, countryside road, it’s a super-highway that runs straight from your gut to your brain, complete with neurons and hormones. In fact, some even call it the “second brain”!*
Now, for those of us with an irritable bowel, this highway can be a bit touchy, complete with detours and deadends. Some research suggests certain stimuli–like food or stress– triggers our symptoms. It’s like our gut microbiome (you know, the little fellas living in our bellies) have gone rogue!
While research is on-going, some of the first steps you can take are in my AnnaKay “ight” method: “Sleep tight, drink right, eat bright!”
Sleep tight: Turns out, getting enough ZZZs can do wonders for our immune system and help our body repair itself. So hit the hay, folks!
Drink right: staying hydrated helps maintain healthy digestion, so pick up some good old H2O! (Going alkaline is extremely important)
Eat bright: a diet rich in non-triggering fiber, fruits and veggies is a great way to keep those gut microbes happy. So load up on the good stuff!
Let’s keep gut-brain axis in tip-top shape.
